FAQ

What if they leak?

I only sell nappies that are so well designed and such good quality that they shouldn’t leak. The outer layers are called leak proof for a reason!

Most problems can be resolved by using the correct absorbency. A folded over slim booster can add extra absorbency where your child needs it but with minimal bulk. Or perhaps you might need an insert with extra absorption like hemp. Or you simply might not be fitting or tucking them in correctly. Or maybe you just need to change more frequently.

I allow you to purchase inserts and boosters individually and at a cheaper delivery cost so you don’t have to wait for your next bundle order.

Please ask me if you ever need any advice.

What about the cost isn’t it expensive?

The cost of building your own stash is expensive initially, but good nappies are an investment that should last more than 1 child. The cost saving comparison has been broken down by several websites, however I also suggest reading the Which? article.

Local councils offer incentive schemes of around £30-£50 towards your stash because it saves them expensive landfill. A list of councils offering incentives is available on the Nappy Alliance website.

To help economise you can wash predominantly at 40, choose your own detergent, and buy pre-loved, which will all save you a bit of cash in the long run. However we don't advise buying cheap nappies which are often substandard. See my blog for more details. If you look after your nappies you can also always sell them on afterwards and recoup some of your initial spend.

To convert to a greener energy supplier, Octopus Energy, save money and get £50 for switching, follow this link: share.octopus.energy/maize-wasp-985

At Berries & Bundles HQ we managed to save £400 per year just by switching to them and their renewable energy fixed tariff!

My child can’t use them at nursery so what’s the point?

If your child is at home you will get more use of your investment in a nappy stash and similar if you work part-time. However, if you are using your nappies at home or at weekends whilst your child in full time childcare with disposables provided remember you will need a smaller stash of nappies, already keeping down the cost. You will only need enough nappies for 2 days/nights which with my bundles can cost you as little as around £100 or less for pre-loved. Most local councils also have an incentive scheme where you can claim back around £30-£50 so at least a third of your stash is free!

For more tips on real nappies in a childcare setting see my blog post.

Can I use a nappy cream?

Yes – although always use a fleece liner to protect your nappy. I suggest using something fragrance free because you are less likely to contaminate your stash with unwanted fragrances and they are the most gentle on your baby’s bum. I like Aveeno daily barrier cream, Child’s Farm and Bepanthen.

See my blog post for further details on how cloth nappies prevent nappy rash.

Can't I get a free trial from a nappy library?

You can and I encourage doing your research. However most services require an administration fee/deposit, and it can take months to do a trial once you have joined the local library waiting list. I will attempt to post out to you on the same or next day.

Also think about if you would really want to use nappies on your child that have been used by 20 other babies? My trial bundles are all brand new, and pre-loved nappies are only used by 1 family and for 4 weeks in comparison.

Common worries

I already do enough washing anyway

This is a big one. But it is possible, and even if you live in a house without a tumble drier, as we do.

In reality you will need fewer clothes for your baby or toddler using cloth nappies because their clothes can go in with the nappy wash.

You can include other items in your wash. Towels, bedding and underwear are often the easiest to include as towels are best washed without fabric conditioner.

For further discussion/tips on this see my blog.

I don’t like the big bum/clothes don’t fit

I believe you will fall in love with the fluffy bummed cuteness and grow to love them! When it’s your child in them looking so cute and trendy and comfortable you will automatically feel that love grow.

You can also dress your baby in standard UK high street and supermarket clothes, you just have to be aware of the shape before you buy. See my blog for more advice.

My partner isn’t convinced

People fear what they don’t know. This is normal!

I believe once they see the reduced overall costs, decrease in stink and healthier bum on your baby they will come around.

One of the easiest ways to help overcome the fear is to keep a “sized” pocket nappy handy for your partner to use when changing, as these are a lot less scary than having multiple snaps to fasten to get the right fit and are as quick and easy to change as a disposable.

Disposable liners can also help with the partner who is scared of poo.

I don’t want to use them at night/away from home

This is fine. No judgement here. But I think you will be confident enough to cloth anywhere eventually. Just take it at your own pace and figure out what works for you and your family.
